How a Designer Does it: Halloween Edition

halloween design ideas

Halloween is just weeks away, so let’s discuss how to dial up your décor for the occasion. Now, when it comes to any holiday decorating, there is a fine line between kitschy and chic, and this seems to be especially true of Halloween. Of course, if you love the campy vibe and those giant inflatable Frankensteins put a smile on your face- right on! Design is really all about what makes YOU happy, but we’re going show you that not only can your Halloween décor be festive, but it can also look fabulous.

Let’s say you want to throw a Halloween party. Whether you’re just serving cocktails or having a multicourse dinner, either way, you’re going to need some legit barware…

How cool is that skeleton bar cart? And wouldn’t it be super fun to toast with those champagne flutes? It’s funny; who would have thought that skeleton-themed anything could be so adorable? Pottery Barn kinda nailed it!

What if you’re serving more than just cocktails and are going for a full-on Halloween-themed dinner party? We say go for a moody black and white theme with touches of metals- a goth meets glam vibe. Those hypnotic dinner plates are definitely a conversation piece, and we also love how the serpent napkin rings tie in with the serving bowl.

But, of course, no tablescape is complete without a centerpiece…

Here are two little centerpiece vignettes; the one at the top is definitely on the moody side, but there’s still warmth to it with the brass glass pumpkins and the glow from the light-up wire pumpkins. And don’t be afraid to think outside of the box regarding the color palette; the bottom grouping here is an excellent example of that with the traditional motifs of pumpkins and skeletons but done in unexpected blue and red tones. We also love how the botanicals add visual height and texture.

Halloween décor doesn’t have to be all dark and moody; it can also look fresh and pretty, and this mantel pic proves it. We love the combo of mercury glass and soft green pumpkins, plus the draped moss is a great touch. Very lovely.

Last but certainly not least is the front door décor. This raven wreath is fun and looks great paired with the black branch in a vase. The doormats are also really charming, but if you ask me, the coolest option in this group is this incredibly inventive garland of black-lit candles that look like they are just floating in the air- so freakin’ cool! We think it would look awesome suspended from a tree, or take it indoors and hang it above your dining room table.
